BITS Pilani has received a $1 million contribution from alumnus and entrepreneur Anurag Jain to help establish a new Centre of Excellence in advanced materials at its Goa campus. The centre is expected to focus on research areas with direct relevance to energy, electronics and industrial technology.
What the centre plans to study
The proposed work includes two-dimensional and functional materials with applications in batteries, supercapacitors, hydrogen production, fuel cells, photovoltaics, carbon capture, semiconductors and sensors. Those fields sit at the intersection of climate technology and strategic manufacturing.
Why materials research is foundational
Breakthroughs in energy storage, chips or clean hydrogen often depend on discovering or engineering materials with better conductivity, durability, cost or thermal performance. The visible product may be a battery or sensor, but the competitive advantage can begin at the material level.
The gift is a starting point, not the full budget
BITS Pilani has said the centre will require multi-million-dollar investment over time. That means the initial donation is best understood as anchor funding that can attract additional academic, industry and philanthropic support.
What to watch
The next milestones will be faculty recruitment, research facilities, industry partnerships and published work. Long-term impact will depend on whether the centre can translate laboratory results into patents, startups or scalable industrial processes.
Bottom line
The donation targets an area where patient research can eventually influence several industries at once — from clean energy to semiconductors.
