Planning a branch visit later this month? Do not rely on a single nationwide “bank holiday list”. September 2026 includes both all-India weekend closures and regional holidays that apply only in selected cities.
The next major dates after September 9
- September 11: Jaipur — local election-related holiday listed for the municipal corporation jurisdiction
- September 12: second Saturday nationwide; Guwahati also observes Srimanta Sankardeva’s Tirubhav Tithi
- September 14: Ganesh Chaturthi in several centres including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Panaji, Bhubaneswar, Belapur and Nagpur
- September 15: regional closures including Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and Panaji
- September 21: regional holidays in Bhubaneswar and Thiruvananthapuram
- September 22: Karma Puja in Ranchi
- September 23: Maharaja Hari Singh Ji’s birthday in Jammu and Srinagar
- September 25: Indrajatra in Gangtok
- September 26: fourth Saturday nationwide
The biggest mistake: assuming every holiday is national
RBI bank holidays are location-specific. A branch in one state can be closed for a festival while a branch in another state operates normally. That is why customers should check the RBI holiday calendar for their own regional office or confirm with their bank before travelling.
Will UPI and online banking stop?
Branch closures do not normally shut down UPI, mobile banking or internet banking. ATMs also remain available, subject to the bank’s normal service conditions. RBI’s RTGS system operates around the clock.
What can still be delayed?
Anything that requires a physical branch — paperwork, some account-service requests, in-person verification or cash-related branch work — may have to wait until the branch reopens.
Best way to avoid a wasted trip
Check the date, your city and your branch before leaving home. The second and fourth Saturday rule is nationwide, but most festival holidays in September are regional.
