Bumrah Fit, Harshit Rana Out, Yash Thakur In: India’s Pace Attack Changes Before Afghanistan and Asian Games

India’s fast-bowling plans have changed again just before the Afghanistan T20I series and the Asian Games.

Jasprit Bumrah has received fitness clearance to return, while Harshit Rana has been ruled out after suffering a rectus femoris strain during a match simulation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

Vidarbha fast bowler Yash Thakur has been named Rana’s replacement in both squads.

What happened to Harshit Rana?

Rana had been progressing through rehabilitation and had initially been selected subject to fitness.

According to the BCCI, he sustained the new strain while bowling during a match simulation on September 7. The setback rules him out of the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan as well as the Asian Games.

Why the injury is especially frustrating

Rana has already spent a significant period dealing with fitness problems.

A fresh injury during the final stages of a return is particularly difficult because it resets both rehabilitation and match-readiness timelines.

Who is Yash Thakur?

The 27-year-old Vidarbha pacer recently made his T20I debut during India’s tour of Zimbabwe in July.

He played two matches and took four wickets. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he has 81 wickets from 50 matches at an economy rate of 7.04, according to the BCCI.

Bumrah’s clearance changes the mood

The positive news for India is Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness clearance.

A fit Bumrah changes the shape of any T20 attack because he can bowl with the new ball, through the middle overs and at the death.

His return also gives the team management more flexibility when pairing him with Arshdeep Singh and the newly added Yash Thakur.

Other players have also been cleared

The BCCI confirmed fitness clearance for Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy as well.

That gives India a more complete group ahead of a busy period that includes Afghanistan and the Asian Games in Japan.

Why the replacement matters beyond one series

Late injury replacements often create unexpected opportunities. Yash Thakur now has a chance to move from the edge of India’s T20 pool into high-pressure matches where one strong spell can change selection conversations quickly.

Bottom line

India have regained Bumrah but lost Rana. For the selectors, the immediate solution is Yash Thakur. For the player, it is a sudden opening: two squads, important matches and a chance to prove that a replacement call-up can become something more permanent.
