India Will Play Japan in a T20I for the First Time — Here’s Why the September 22 Match Matters

India and Japan have never met in a men’s T20I. That changes on September 22 in Sano, days before the Asian Games cricket tournament.

India and Japan are about to play a cricket match that has never happened before. The two men’s national teams will meet in a T20 International on September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture.

Why this match is historic

It will be the first men’s T20I between India and Japan. The game has been announced as the Suzuki Cup and is also part of celebrations marking 75 years of India-Japan diplomatic relations.

The BCCI and Japan Cricket Association have linked the fixture to “Sport 75”, an initiative intended to deepen sporting exchange between the two countries.

The timing is not accidental

The match comes immediately before the men’s cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. Japan begin their Asian Games campaign in the group stage, while India are due to enter directly at the quarter-final stage.

That makes the Sano T20I a useful competitive rehearsal for both teams, even though they enter with very different levels of international experience.

Japan have already named their squad

Japan announced their group on September 8. Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming, the country’s all-time leading T20I run-scorer, will captain the side. Ibrahim Takahashi and Declan Suzuki-McComb are among the more experienced players, while emerging all-rounder Jake Kusuda-Nairn has also been included.

What makes this interesting for India?

India enter the contest as the reigning men’s T20 World Cup champions and the No.1-ranked T20I side, according to the ICC’s announcement. On paper, that creates a huge gap. In practice, the curiosity is in seeing how India approach a one-off match in unfamiliar conditions just before another multi-team event.

What makes this enormous for Japan?

For Japan, facing India offers something domestic preparation cannot reproduce: exposure to elite international pace, spin, batting depth and the pressure of playing one of cricket’s biggest teams.

The result may be predictable to many fans, but the significance is bigger than the scorecard. A first-ever T20I between the countries gives Japanese cricket a global spotlight and gives India a rare warm-up in the host nation before the Asian Games.
