19 Dead in ‘Dry’ Nagaland After Suspected Spurious Liquor — SIT Begins Probe

Nagaland police investigation after suspected spurious liquor deaths
19 Dead in ‘Dry’ Nagaland After Suspected Spurious Liquor — SIT Begins Probe

At least 19 people have died across Nagaland’s Mokokchung and Tuensang districts after allegedly consuming suspected spurious liquor, according to police reports, prompting a Special Investigation Team probe into the source and distribution chain.

Eight deaths were reported in Mokokchung and 11 in Tuensang. Police have conducted raids, arrested 19 people and seized nearly 3,000 bottles of liquor. Samples have been sent for forensic examination to determine the precise cause of the deaths.

The case is particularly significant because Nagaland has had prohibition in force since 1990. A legal ban can restrict legitimate sales without necessarily eliminating demand, which can create an underground market where products bypass normal quality controls. That does not by itself establish what happened in this case, but it is an important part of the policy context.

Police have advised people not to consume unidentified, unlabelled or suspected illicit liquor. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as blurred vision, dizziness, breathing difficulty or loss of consciousness after suspected exposure should seek urgent medical care. The forensic findings and the SIT’s supply-chain investigation will be critical to establishing responsibility.
