Indian banks are becoming more digital, but the RBI is warning that this progress can create a new kind of shared vulnerability.
What the RBI flagged
Deputy Governor Rohit Jain said many banks are increasingly dependent on a small number of cloud, technology and model providers. If one major provider suffers an outage, cyberattack or critical failure, several banks could be affected at the same time.
Why this is different from an ordinary IT outage
A single-bank technology failure can usually be contained within one institution. Concentration risk is more serious because the same vendor may sit underneath dozens of institutions, turning one problem into a sector-wide disruption.
Why AI makes the issue bigger
Banks are also adopting external models and AI infrastructure. That creates another layer of dependency if the same few providers power fraud systems, customer support, analytics or core workflows across many lenders.
What banks may need to do
Operational resilience increasingly means more than cybersecurity. Banks may need stronger fallback systems, vendor diversification, data portability and tested contingency plans.
Bottom line
The RBI’s warning is simple: digital efficiency is valuable, but if every bank relies on the same technology backbone, one failure can become everyone’s problem.
