The United States and China are preparing for talks focused specifically on AI safety, according to Reuters reporting on discussions planned for mid-September. If the meeting goes ahead, it would be the first official bilateral dialogue devoted exclusively to AI safety since President Donald Trump returned to office.
What Washington wants to discuss
US officials are interested in cooperation around monitoring AI-directed cyberattacks and information sharing between leading labs. The idea is that both countries are exposed if autonomous systems trigger a cross-border cyber incident that neither side fully controls.
The rivalry does not disappear
Washington also wants to raise concerns about alleged copying or distillation of proprietary US models, while Chinese officials have questioned whether American frontier labs are sufficiently regulated. Safety cooperation therefore sits directly beside commercial and strategic competition.
Even a small channel could matter
The two governments do not need to agree on broad AI policy for crisis communication to be useful. Shared incident language, technical contacts or notification mechanisms could reduce misinterpretation during a serious AI-linked event.
What to watch
Reuters noted that the timing was tentative and a White House official said no meeting was formally planned at that stage. The most important signal will be whether the dialogue becomes an institutional channel rather than a one-time diplomatic event.
Bottom line
AI may become another strategic competition between Washington and Beijing, but safety is one area where total separation could make both sides less secure.
